comics by chinese students: part 1

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Finally, I am going to start putting comics up from my students in China.  Many will be 1-2 pages in length.  The students had to download a program and install, find photos, learn the software, and design their comics: all in one afternoon.  I think they did a GREAT job!  Click the comic to see a clear copy.

a flair for the dramatic . . . my first manga experience

Some of my students in China introduced me to One Piece by Eiichiro Oda.  All I knew when I left China was that One Piece was about pirates with certain powers or talents who were searching for the greatest treasure of all times . . . one piece.  I knew that the captain of this band of unusual pirates was Luffy, and that he wore a straw hat.

My students seemed to really like this manga, and so I decided on my return that I would purchase and give it a try.  My initial thought was “wow, it’s harder to read back to front and right to left than I thought it would be” (I still get turned around at times).  My next thoughts were a little more complicated.  There are many scenes, unlike any American comics I’ve ever read, that I  simply find difficult to decipher.  Take for instance this image:

That’s right, I arrived home on Tuesday, the 26th, at 1:00 am.  Jetlag is still my closest companion right now.  My equilibrium is still off from all of the air travel, and sleep isn’t exactly normal.  When I got in Tuesday morning, I ended up taking Tylenol PM to finally fall asleep around 2:00 AM.  I woke up at 9:00 AMon Tuesday and somehow managed to stay up until 11:00 PM.  I immediately fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.  That lasted until about 3:00 AM when I woke up and was wide awake.  I read until time to go to work.  I lasted at work until about 2:00 PM yesterday before I finally had to call it quits for the day.  Last night, I did not take any chances and took Motrin PM around 10:00.  That seemed to work, as I was able to fall back to sleep each time I awoke to thunder and lightening, but for some reason, today I still feel groggy and dizzy.  Hopefully this will improve as the week goes on.

great night . . . until . . .

I have to apologize to my final class for not having their picture to post tonight.  We took the picture yesterday, but before I could get it moved to my computer, my camera was stolen when we went down Lotus Street tonight.  Within 30 seconds, it was gone.  I had taken a picture, put the camera in my short’s pocket, which I kept my hand on, but when I went to grab it out again (not 30 seconds later), it was gone.  I didn’t feel anything.  And before you ask whether or not anyone bumped into me, EVERYONE bumps into you here.

3 1/2 down, 1 1/2 to go

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Well, I finished up with class 3 yesterday and started class 4 today.  This is the first time that I have had a LOT more guys than gals in the class.  The were trying very hard to stay awake today, but then again, so was I.  After lunch I had a killer headache, and if it hadn’t been for Joy (another teacher) having Motrin, it would have been a much more miserable afternoon than it was.

Here is the class photo of my last class.  I am VERY proud to announce that I learned everyone of their names the FIRST day of class.  This is a first for me.  I am really bad with names, and I’ve been trying so hard to learn their English names, but this is the first class I succeeded.  I wish I could learn their given, Chinese, names, but I just don’t have an ear for Chinese names.

time to catch up

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Ok, so don’t expect any rhyme or reason to this post.  I have a lot of things that I need to catch up on, and I only have a little over an hour and the internet connection to contend with, so just roll with it!!

First things first.  I am already 2/3’s of the way through my third class, and I haven’t even introduced you to my second class yet.  So here they are.  Another great bunch of students who did some really amazing work with comics.  I will be posting some of their work soon.

Day . . . uhm . . . yea, another day

Friday, July 8th, 2011

I’m currently on day two of class two and I’m watching the Green Hornet for the second time.  I have a feeling that by the end of 5 classes, I might have this memorized.  Problem is that it is not even that great of a movie.  It takes the Green Hornet and makes a completely laughable character out of him.  So why use it?  Several reasons.  The Green Hornet was a radio show from 1936 to 1951 (?).  In 1940 the comic book began.  It was even a TV show with Bruce Lee as Kato for a year, and now it’s a modern movie.  So I have a copy of the radio show, which I’ve cleaned up and slowed down for students (and they still cannot understand it), a comic book on the iPad written in the 1930 style, a comic book on the iPad written in the modern style, and the movie.  So we spend one morning and part of the afternoon following the evolution of The Green Hornet!!
